Wood preservative for coop
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:10 »
I have a wooden coop that could do with a coat of preservative before the weather gets any worse (the door is starting to stick where it has been so wet lately).

Can anyone recommend one that is safe for the chickens? It is smooth planed wood, not rough sawn if that helps, so will need something suitable - I dont know whether something like Cuprinol would harm the birds though.

Hi Dawn,

The advice I was given when treating my hen house was to use something that is 'bat friendly'.  As bats are a protected species commercial properties etc. must use bat (or pet if it's specified) friendly products (something like that).  This should be clearly marked...

I used a decking oil for mine which looked nice - didn't add too much colour but lots of protection.  If you have a soft wood, pine etc., then I wouldn't recommend a fence stain because it is often absorbed unevenly and therefore looks blotchy.

Hope this helps a bit.
