Safe wood preservative?
« on: May 05, 2013, 19:06 »
No doubt this has been asked many times - useless to go to the companies' webpages, their FAQ's are all basically "Why is Brand X so brilliant?"  "Thank you for asking, Brand X is so brilliant because..."

What have others found useful to not kill their chickens?  While I'm at it I want to do our garden trellis - the last twelve months' bizarre weather have killed our clematis so I've pulled it all off and might as well put some preservative on before I plant something else to climb up it - so I'm after a plant/pet friendly alternative to creosote.

Thank you.

Creosote is no longer sold anyway.  The water based shed paints are fine, Cuprinol, Sadolin that sort of thing. The big chains do their own brands of course

My husband has just bought some creosote for the shed - I wonder if it was old stock?  Or maybe not really creosote?

I think there was an earlier post on this and the suggestion was to use anything that is bat friendly.  If you look on Natural England's website there is a list of suitable products. I've tried to post a link below but if this doesn't work just google "bat friendly wood preservative" and that should turn up the right page  :)

I would doubt that it is creosote as it is only for licensed use by professionals and I believe then only to be used on previously creosoted wood.

The new product is called creocote so it would be easy to misread.

That will be it. My husband is of course the most wonderful man in the world in every other respect but he could not spell if his life depended on it (not a criticism, especially as he's going to make the chicken coop  ).
