Secateurs and Loppers - recommendations
« on: February 09, 2011, 09:42 »
Cheap loppers and Secateures don't work for long.  I have found over the years that a new pair is useless after one season!!  Can anybody recommend a brand that will perform year after year.  I have several fruit trees to prune.

regards.

As far as secateurs are concerned, Felco are hard to beat (for quality if not on price; such is life!)

I know nothing about loppers I'm afraid.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I couldn't agree more about the secateurs. They also do a lopper if I remember correctly.
Failing that, I like the sandvik (?) range.

Thanks JayG and Gwiz - just ordered Felco 11 secateurs and Alan Tichmarch ratchet loppers, a bit pricey but if they last then money well spent!!  I've also ordered a Felco ceramic stone so I can keep them sharp.

Regards.

Hi I have just sharpened (hopefully) a pair of anvil type loppers - is the blade sharpened on both sides? Should the blade come into contact with the anvil (metal to metal contact)? Seems strange - surely this action would blunt the blade every time!!  Somebody explain!

Regards.

You should find that the anvil is made of a softer metal than the blade, and yes you can sharpen from both sides

Been using a Fiskars lopper for two years, about 18" long and lightweight (non metallic construction). works great upto about 1/2" branches and you can lopp all day with no aching arms!
