I have only been keeping hens for just over two years and I have had very few problems. I have had to learn from books or speak to people at shows as I don't know anyone locally to talk to about keeping chickens. I have about 25 now. I have had to go to a vet to have my brahma put to sleep as I could not do the deed myself and neither could my husband. Has anyone got any advice on how to carry this out myself in future?  :(

Thanks for that. I will proberbly try one as I don't fancy doing the deed with my bare hands! I will look at your articl on birds for the table. I only have birds for eggs at present but it is something that I have been thinking about. I don't know yet if the family would actually eat our own birds :?

I had absolutely no problem killing our ducks for the table.  We never gave it a thought all the time that the wonderful cooking aromas were swirling around the kitchen.   BUT ... we simply couldn't eat them.

In retrospect, giving them names was not a good idea

Hi chicken lady, the hens you have named keep them as your egg layers and buy different birds for the table. Icant belive you are having the same conversations as we (me and my family) are having.

You can't eat anything you've given a name (not decent).  Any bird intended for the table you can just call "dinner" that way you get used to the idea
