Worming now Flubenvet out again
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:00 »
Hi
We only got our chickens in September and couldn't get hold of the Flubenvet to worm our chooks. We have used verm-ex in the interim and have now received our order of Flubenvet. Everything I've read says to do the worming in Autumn and Spring... Is it worth me doing the Flubenvet in January or shall I wait til March now? I will still use the verm-ex monthly as everyone seems to say this keeps them healthy.  ;)

To be absolutely sure they are worm free worm them 3 or 4 times a year and it doesn't matter if you do this Jan/Apr/Jul and Oct or Mar/Jun/Sept and Dec etc.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you haven't wormed your birds so far and don't know when they were wormed prior to you getting them, I would go ahead now.

Flubenvet is very safe.  Most people worm twice a year, but many on here worm more frequently if their birds are in fixed runs.  You could worm the chooks again in spring with no problems  :)

I don't use Verm-ex and it is a preventative, not a cure, so don't rely on it having done anything so far if your birds were already full of worms.  Another thing a lot of us use to prevent worms is garlic.  Some put whole cloves in the drinkers.  I use the dehydrated stuff sold in country stores for feeding to horses and put some in the feed.  My lot love it and it is a lot cheaper than Verm-ex.  Just a thought  :)

if your birds are free ranging or in an uncovered run then ideally they need worming 4 times a year because they are at greater risk from catching worms from the wild birds.
