Bright lights chard
« on: September 16, 2007, 20:27 »
I planted some chard seeds in a bed, none came up, but there was loads all over the weedy bits of the plot.. I moved them and with  bit of TLC they have taken and are healthy now.
They are around 10 inches high. Should I leave them to get bigger and stronger or can I start taking some leaves now?
The stems are not long they look a bit spinachy mainly pale (as in lime green not dark) leaves.
If I take the leaves do I just chop the lot off or do I take the outer leaves and leave the smaller 'core' leaves?
Thanks
Lucy

Use them anytime.  Pull outer leaves as you would pull rhubarb & don't take more than half the plant.   Hold plant steady to avoid root disturbance.  Stems and leaves are both edible

Mine lasted all through last winter, just taking a couple of leaves a week off each plant.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
