Title: Old rotovator
Post by: tinker179 on July 06, 2010, 17:10
Hi All
I have recently bought an old Merry tiller titan so that i can try and turn some scrub land into a veg garden in due course. However......it starts ok but the tines are being permanently driven and although have downloaded the useful Manual I can't see how to disengage the drive. I have followed all the clutch adjustments but it seems to me that as long as the engine drive shaft is connected via the belt to the gearbox drive, it will always be in a drive situation.

I'm at a loss-can anyone help please. sorry about the novel

Tinker

I'm not too familiar with this model, but it seems to me that there would be some method of un-tightening the belt so that the drive is taken off?

Our Mr tallentire is the merry tiller man, also Dorimower is usually well up on Merry tillers.
I'm sure they will be along soon.

Disconnect the clutch cable from the spring at the cluch lever so the jockey wheel can return to the fully off position. Then start the machine and if the rotors still turn, the previous owner has fitted the wrong belt.

It does sound as if someone has fitted a short belt. you don’t mention if you have downloaded the Major book from this site, or a Titan one which used to be on a site called stocksyisageek.com but has been moved elsewhere. Although the 1968 to 78 Major’s clutch adjustment is the same as the contemporary Titan, the pre 1978 Titan used an A41 belt between the 3” engine pulley and the 6” chaincase pulley for rotivating. There is a picture of the set up when declutched, posted on http://www.merrytiller.co.uk/images/titan%20belts

No matter how slack the belt is it won’t disengage properly without the belt guide. It amazes me how many Merry Tillers are sold on eBay with this missing.

Regards Richard

Richard....and all who have responded, a big thankyou. Its nice to know someone out there is interested.
You are correct in that the lower belt guide is broken and will measure the belt tomorrow to see if its correct spec. Do you think Merry Tiller.co.uk will have a Guide Bracket? Also can you elaborate on why even if the belt is slack the clutch won't disengag.
many thanks again ....Les

I only make guides for the pre 1978 model Titan at the moment.

Although it looks like the guide is holding the belt against the engine pulley, it actually makes it form a loop round the pulley without the belt griping the pulley at all. With no guide the belt drops into the vee, grips, turns, flicks out then drops in again.

Hi Richard

Thanks again...your answer does make sense now. I don't know how old my Titan is unfortunately and there is no serial number plate on the frame. I can see where the lower guide was welded to the guide bracket but its not there so will have to try and find a 90 degree piece of metal from somewhere and try to bolt to the guide.

Is the guide you supply the same as in the drive belt diagram you sent the link for.

thanks

Les

Yes the belt guide MT.3511 is the one I make. This was fitted to the Titans  and GTs with a 10.5” large chaincase pulley. The lower guide is stepped as it needs to be narrower for the 2” pulley.
