Wind trouble
« on: April 05, 2010, 22:28 »
No, I don't mean I had too many sprouts for dinner  :)

I had a lot of stuff coming along nicely in tubs in the greenhouse and after some reasonable weather this last week I put them all outside. Bad move!! We got rid of the snow and frost and now we have gale force winds

Broad beans bent double, onions rocked about so they sit in a hole as big as a politicians mouth and lettuce torn to shreds.

Ah well, things are supposed to improve later this week.

You could try planting a row of something like jerusalem artichokes as a windbreak.  The only problem is that they might give you wind troubles of an entirely different type...

I have a tall hedge at one side and a panel fence at the other. You try living on the Solway Firth. If things are not bolted down they often end up in Northumberland  :D

Yeah and we get some odd things that we'd rather you kept your side of the hill thanks

It's just as flaming windy this side of the hill and anything we lose will end up on other side of North Sea!

Hedges make much better windbreaks than solid fences; something to do with aerodynamics I believe (although I've never understood what chocolate has got to do with it!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

You're quite right JayG. Half the fence blew down the other night but the hedge is still there  :D

Our site is subject to strong winds on occasion like last Thursday when my shed decided on another lie down although as it has gone face down this time I think its given up :nowink:. I have the only horizontal shed on the site now. The big 12ft hedge at the bottom of the  site does filter the wind without that I think nothing would be safe unless bolted down.
