Crops for east facing border?
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:39 »
I have a 4ft fence along the side of the allotment with a 2 ft border so only gets the morning sun.  Any suggestions for crops that would appreciate that sort of aspect.  The soil is quite good but a little on the heavy side if that helps.  Oh, it might also help to know I am in north east England.

All tips welcome!

Lettuce and spinach are great for that spot. You could also trellis cukes as they don't need full sun, same with climbing beans.  I've also done sweet peppers in that situation and they produced very well for me.

I'd go with some brassicas such as caulis as they can "blow" more in full sun. Try swedes, parsnips and carrots - anything that doesn't need the sun to ripen them like onions do. Blackberries are also good as are some currant bushes.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Assuming that you are on an open allotment site and nothing else shades the border, I would say it's as good a place as any to grow anything..........it's not as if it's in permanent shade.
Part of my garden plot only gets sun in the morning and it just takes its turn in the rotation, in the same way as the rest :D
although I will admit it wouldn't be the best place to try tomatoes

Thank you for your replies.  I think I'll try some cucumbers, lettuce and kale and perhaps some fruit bushes in there as well.  Sadly, I don't think we get the temperatures here for sweet peppers even in permanent sun but I might try some carrots just to see how they do in heavier ground.
