How much time do hens normally spend it their coop
« on: August 11, 2012, 17:49 »
Hi
I'm new to hen keeping, picked up my 3 hybrids on Tuesday. The have a fixed run and raised coop and are being let out early am and shut up at dusk, however they seem to be opting to spend a lot of time inside the coop. Is this normal at this early stage? Are they simply adjusting to their surroundings? I expected them to be in the run nearly all day. They seem happy enough and are getting friendly. I intend to let them free range in the garden over time, they had a short venture out this afternoon
:)

How old are they? Perhaps they are getting ready to lay.
How were they kept before you got them? If they aren't used to being out it can frightening for them, don't worry they will settle down.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi, they were sold as 'point of lay' I suspect 2 of them are younger than the third though cos visibly smaller. They were kept in a large barn, good point, don't think they had access to outdoor space.

Good to know, thanks!!

Yes, the house is raised, so the area underneath is shaded.

Many thanks everyone, Guess I've got to be a little more patient.
