laying eggs in the winter
« on: November 10, 2007, 20:52 »
Hello,It is now fall and getting very cold out and I am only getting 3 eggs a day.(I have 16 hens and use to getting 6 to 10 a day) I know they lay less in the winter but is their anything I can do to make them lay more? Like maybe a timer with a light in the coop so there's more light?
Please let me know what I could do.    Thanks,
                           Princess Poultry :)

ach munty you beat me to it!

http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=9292 this was the last discussion on the subject.

it's up to you to make up your own mind but personally i wouldn't interfere with the hens like that, it's un-natural...

Sometimes when someone comes to the door for eggs that I haven't got, I think, should I put a light timer on in the POL's house?  But then I think of all those poor ex batts I had and decide no, they lay if they want to, but if they don't..... well,  the man up the road always has some going!!!!

i don't keep the chooks myself - my dad has them up in the woods - but we just get point of lays - for this time of year

we only have about 80 chooks at the minute - 15 pols - and that keeps us and friends etc in eggs - we always lose a few to the fox over the year and the small ones get taken by the sparrowhawk - so come next summer another 10 or 15 pol get drafted in

i don't post in here very often - rather stick to gyo & gg - but i might put a few piccies up if you'd like to see some - we have some beautiful game birds that came in the summer - but the bgrs fly everywhere - and roost in the trees - it is tricky to get them in at night

i'm back on wood duty on weds - so i'll take some piccies of the little darlings - the game birds first i think - very young - but lovely - maybe a couple of the old birds too - they just waddle about - very slow so easy to photograph

my camera won't have enough memory for all of them in 1 go
