We have reroofed our wooden coop with onduline after the dreaded red mite invaded. We were thinking we would have to replace the coop but seem to have it under control with diatom and poultry shield (fingers crossed). If we can't control the red mite next time we get some warm weather, we are looking at converting a storage shed. Our coop is in a sheltered spot out of the wind and last winter we put fibreglass foam wall insulation under the roof which stopped condensation.

I found the link when looking for plastic hen houses that aren't eglus - I know lots of people swear by them but I've had mixed reports from friends and the cost of a cube to house our little flock is way more than I earn in a month in the current climate.

Most of our girls are in a normal wooden shed but we have our Faverolles in a Chicube, which is insulated.  We contemplated those plastic storage things but they seemed to be rather thin.  It could be worth going to B&Q or somewhere like that and having a good poke around at them before you decide.

It is difficult to tell from a photo but the perch does not look wide enough and is too round to be comfortable for chooks. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I have about 12 sleeping in trees and shrubs and they roost on thinner branches than this - or at least the ones in the cherry trees that I can see do. They are all large fowl and sleep over 20 feet high on real thin branches which protects them from foxes and mink which if they climbed wouldn't be able to stand on the branches  :D.
Staffies are softer than you think.

if you look at this link in the design and constuction section posted by Aunt Sally :-

http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/device/devicesToC.html

you will find a whole section on chickens and bees and useful things you can easily make.
One of which is a fold away perch set up which would be just great for those plastic storage bins.

Or why not use those wooden shoe storage racks - again they seem ideal  :D

In my humble opinion I would say that the garden storage conversion is a great idea. It may not give you a 'perfect' coop, but it will be great fun adapting it to your chickens needs. It will save a whole bunch of money, you'll greatly reduce any red mite problem and it wont be at all unsightly. You go for it and good luck to you!

Yes.  We have decided not to move house for the forseeable.  I say decided, got sick of showing idiots around who thought that we would give it away!  We are rethinking the garden layout to make the most of it so it will be a handy link.  Would love a small plot locally but nothing on the market at the moment.
