Heat lamp
« on: May 20, 2011, 10:47 »
Our baby chicks are currently indoors. They have a heat lamp, but the weather is getting warmer. How long do they need the lamp ?. They are a week old now. They do seem to move from being directly under it.

Do you have a thermometer under the lamp?

At a week old, they still need 28-30*C, slowly decreasing (by increasing the height of the lamp) by 3-5* every week for about 4 weeks, then off heat during the day with heat at night, before a few days off heat all together before putting outside (preferably not when it is cold/windy/rainy) ;)

My chicks are now 7 weeks old and I kept asking the same questions. However I found they let me know themselves my moving away, as Casey said raise the lamp or change to lower watt bulb if they are too hot
