urgent advice needed
« on: May 17, 2010, 20:41 »
hello
have had my chooks for 2 weeks and they are very happy in their Eglu cube and run, the problem is that I have broken my foot and have to have surgery tomorrow and my son can only visit the chooks (and me) once a day in the evening- so will it be okay to leave the pop hole open??  The run is L shaped and I have placed large paving slabs on the 'skirt'. Any advice welcome
thanks
Jane

do you not have anybody such as a neighbour who can let them out and check on their water etc in return for any eggs if they are laying?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Isd it not the eglu run but a purpose built run ?

If you think the run is fox proof.  i.e.

 - Weld mesh rather than chicken wire.

 - Roofed or over 7 ft high.

 - Mesh skirt or burried mesh

then I think it would be ok to leave the pop hole open.

too far from me, hopefully somebody will live close by  :)
If nobody can then you will have to take the risk (I have done so myself before but didn't like to). Make sure they have got water, feed etc. How long will you be in hospital?

it's the eglu run so is completely enclosed and will probably have to risk it- thanks for your advice and support- will keep you posted

I don't think it's a big risk to take.

I hope the op goes well :)

the proper eglu runs are fine so your hens will be ok, good luck with the operation and tomorrow you will be able to hobble out to see them (get your son to put a couple of chairs near them so you can sit with your plaster cast up on the other chair and watch them  :D

have you thought of asking a neighbour. I usually ask my son but recently he was away for the weekend and rather than cancel my plans I asked my neighbour. We had only recently moved here but I bit the bullet and asked (as she seemed friendly enough)  She was delighted to be asked (thankfully) and cared for them for me, as she'd formerly had a small holding of her own.  If it's only overnight it might be worth asking  :)
