which breed would you recommend for me?
« on: September 26, 2009, 15:01 »
to introduce into my flock...
I know I will need to put 2 in.. I would like hens who lay through the winter, if poss.
My colour preference is white.  Hardy and friendly too.

TIA
2 Gingernut Rangers
1 Miss Pepperpot
2 Light sussex (bantoms)
and
4 ex battery hens, Katie, Sam, Lucy and Camilla.

black rocks or cuckoo marans, sorry there not white but are very friendly and my two are laying like troopers at the moment.   The marans are greyish with white flecks through them though.  nickyx

The longest I've gone without eggies from my Light Sussex was 4 weeks in winter(which I didn't think was too bad) they don't both lay everyday admittedly more like, take it turns but an egg a day is better than nothing :)

They are white with a black collar and tail :) They also make fab mum's in the spring :)

My two are knocking on a bit now but are still laying :D

With your specification I think you've pretty well described Light Sussex there.  Very hardy, adapt well to all systems of husbandry, are a top pure breed producer, friendly and very easy going birds, big and fluffy but still quite active.  Ohh...... and they're white, or genetically silver, too.

I started with these birds many years ago and despite having kept (and still do) many other breeds which were lovely too, Light Sussex still find a place in my flock.  My eldest one currently is 10 years old soon and still looks great with her new set of feathers after the moult.

White Leghorn, but get a young one so you can handle it daily and get it used to you otherwise it will be very flighty.
My young White and Lavender Leghorns (aprox 12 weeks old) are eating out of my hand at the moment.

Thanks all, very helpful.. I will see what I can find.  I don't mind if the're not white so will consider all of them.
Many thanks.
