stolen eggs
« on: May 12, 2009, 19:05 »
Just wondering what arrangements those of you who sell eggs at your gate make. We've just had someone take a dozen without leaving the money, which makes me so mad. Everyone round here who sells things, just leaves them outside with a sign and bolted down money box. How do you all get on?Although the money won't make us rich, it goes towards the chicken feed...so annoying.

set up a fake camera, people will be less likely to steal if they think they are being watched, some people are horrid aren't they?

HI Chicklit,

I think (although I don't sell at the gate; they'd be nicked along with the money box for sure!) that an honesty box is quite risky for exactly this reason

Do you have the words 'honesty box' written anywhere on the cashbox?  if not it might do to add these on as it might guilt the perpetrator into paying for the eggs next time.

good luck with replies from the other guys though :)

We've been selling like this for the last three years and doing reasonably well - it covers all our feed costs and a bit more.

Though we do get the occassional dimwit who pinches them, but not very often.

We heard that sticking a photo of a pair of eyes inside the cup you use as an honesty box helps deter would be theives! I'm not sure it works but Fiona Bruces eyes were particularly effective!!!

I saw that story, putting a poster of eyes up nearby apparently makes for a fuller honesty box. As for the stolen eggs, just think maybe they fed some poor unfortunate who had spent all his money on the rent. And if it was some person in a BMW, may they break all over his cd changer!

My hubby saw the car pull up, it was a shiney Chrysler (the one that looks a bit like a hot rod!) and they actually tooted and waved as they drove away!!! If someone is hard up and needs the eggs, they only need ask and I'd give them to them...but oooohhh the cheek of them, waving to us! Thanks for your tips though.

This just makes me livid!  What cheek!  I have no suggestions, but just wanted to voice my anger!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Maybe put a "stinger" down a bit further up the road... that would slow em down!

shame you didn't get the number plate.
a nice visit from a policeman would make him more honest in the future.....

Maybe if you see them coming again you could put some old eggs out, that'd give them a shock when they cracked them into their frying pan!
