Hi everyone.

I am having a little trouble finding much useful information about Bantam chickens. Can anyone point me in the right direction as i have a few questions:
1) Do they require much space?
2) Do they lay many eggs?
3) Are their eggs smaller than normal chickens (stupid question)?
4) Can you mix bantams with normal chickens, or will they get bullied because of their size?
5) Are they good with children/are they friendly/tame?

Any information on bantams would be useful or does anyone know any good websites?

Mine never seemed to lay that many eggs In fairness Lidy was 8 when I got her and Galaxy took a year to lay. Her eggs were quite small she was a Belgian d' Anver.
As for mixing with larger birds I never had any problems, if anything I found the little ones were more feisty than the big girls
I could pick Galaxy up for a cuddle, she wasn't overly keen but was never nasty, just preferred to be on the ground with the others
Each breed & individual bird is different in temperament, in my opinion a lot depends on who & where you get them from.

You're lucky to get any eggs out of an 8 year old, whether its  bantam or a large fowl.

Bantams require space but not so much as their larger counterparts.
Bantams, dependant on breed can be prolific little layers.
You said it yourself  They are much smaller so they lay eggs which are much smaller but are delicious.
You can mix the two, but this depends very much upon the space available and the temperament of the individual birds concerned.
Bantams are like chickens and they can be  as tame as you make them. The better question would be are your children good with chickens ?.

I have 2 "big" hens 2 medium hens and 5 bantams... (Pekins) the bantams are definately in charge!!!! The ones old enough to lay laid every day till winter but have just started again now.

when you say medium hens what breed are these?

I have all bantams, tiny ones, Dutch and Danvers. They are very good layers and the eggs are delicious although small. The cockerels are a bit fiesty but the hens are very loving and great characters.
