can i get away with 8 ft fence
« on: July 28, 2008, 18:51 »
hello, i am nearly ready to put up my main fencing and was wandering if i can get away with having an 8 foot fence .. most posts are 8 foot so i would only need to swap 2 others that are 6 foot, only wandering as to do a roof on the size of the run i have started to make could  be very tricky .{ the run is approx 32 metres } and because i have done this on my own i havent quite measured each post apart eqaul lenghts   , i have about 4 -5 week deadline  :D to get this done

When we had the small hens ( breed called Americano here in Spain)  they were able to fly over the fence that was about 7 foot- so I had to clip their wings.
My Rhode Island Reds  have never tried to get out over the fence, more likely to get under it with the holes they dig    We are forever going about filling in the very deep holes, one yesterday was a good 18 inches deep honest!  It was right next to the gate into their run (they free range)  I had to fill the hole in before I broke my ankle- they have now moved their hole to another bit of the orchard    I think they have seen the film Chicken Run

If you can't manage to roof it, you can either stretch netting over it or just run a series of strings across it, as if you were keeping birds off your veg patch. That should stop the chooks from flying out but wouldn't keep anything from getting in.

However, I'd have thought that 8ft would be a big climb fro a fox, though I don't know how agile they are.

8 ft should be amply high enough to stop a fox from jumping over.  Foxes can chew through chicken wire though so what material had you planned to use ?  Keep in mind too that foxes are good diggers

If you are talking 8ft HIGH, then it also depends where it is, as usually anything over 2 metres you may have to have planning permission for!!!  So I'd recommend you look into it before you do it.

hello there everyone , i have used galvanised wire mesh round the bottom an  L  shaped that with  motorway sleepers on one side holding the wire down { believe me they are b==y heavy } .lol. then i have slabs down another side an then more sleepers with membrane an a deep litter of wood chip on the other side , an the front of the run will be more sleepers with slabs on with plant tubs .

i was thinking of using 6 foot high chainlink { 25 metres -£68, will need 2 of them ,. but i can get galvanised wire mesh 50 metres roll for £64. was thinking of the wire as its cheaper

Sorry but it looks like chicken wire - I have welded mesh and you can't roll it up it is in sheets. I think a fox would chew through this - what do you think Auntie?
