Double yolkers, but for how much longer?!
« on: July 06, 2008, 20:24 »
Hi, does anyone have nay idea how long hens usually lay double yolkers for?  I understand it is quite common when they first come into lay?  I have 4 Lohmanns and one of them lays nothing but double yolkers (no complaints!)  I was wondering how long I can expect her to carry on for.  Pity its not genetic of I'd be getting her broody......

Lucky you. I have only ever had the one
Its could be genetic but the problem is that the double yolkers don't hatch so you would never find out!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

We had one the other day.  Apparently.  OH didn't bother to tell me until after it had been scrambled.
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Double yolked eggs are not necessarily a desirable thing and can cause problems with egg impaction and egg peritonitis.

Impaction can be caused because they are usually larger than single yolked eggs.  Peritonitis may develop because the following egg's path is blocked and it cannot enter the Fallopian tube.   :(

I had a visitor yesterday that told me she has a black rock that occasionally lays triple yolkers, I've never come across one of those.
