cat food????
« on: April 19, 2008, 19:32 »
I am sure somewhere there is  topic about cat fod?  I am just a bit anxious...I know the hens eat meat (worms, slugs etc) so I tried them with some cat food...they went crazy, I had hardly had chance to put it down before they had scoffed the lot.  SO the thing is even when it isn't a chicken type flavour on the tin it des contain chicken (or turkey) Can this be a good idea?????????????

Don't want them to start having a chew of each other!!!!!

When my chooks are moulting and looking a bit down I give them cat food for the extra protein

Defra is concerned about commercial flocks and disease control.  We all remeber the BSE problem  :!:

I give my chooks some "high protein" feed like cat food only when they need it e.g. when moulting, or in the winter when they've less time to eat and I think it compensates for all the eggs they still produce.

Too much protein is not necesserily a good thing.  There should be sufficient protein in their layers pellets and the worms, slugs and bugs the find most ofthe time.  They love scrambled egg too if I break one

Oh I feel a bit better now... my hens are just pets, we eat the eggs, but do not breed from them or intend to eat the meat....and we only have three...definitely not a commercial flock!!
