Cleaning greenhouse. Mould everywhere
« on: February 02, 2023, 14:08 »
As above grey mould everywhere.
Left plants in plants in place (mainly tomatoes) until the other day. Couldn't climb the steps due to total knee replacement.  Okay now.
Not interested in eco friendly.  I want something that works!
Thank you for your time cc

If it's green on the glass, I use Algon but remove all  plants first
https://www.longacres.co.uk/gardening-products/chemicals-fertilisers/patio-cleaners/algon-organic-path-patio-and-decking-cleaner-concentrate-2-5l/

If you are concerned about mould spores use a greenhouse sulphur candle, they're not cheap cos anything bigger than a 6x6ft needs more than one... (not all the greenhouse candles have sulphur in so watch what you're buying) Need to remove plants for this as well.

No green just grey....is it mould if it's grey.  It came off the rotting plants as there was grey stuff on them as well.

If you don't want to go down the sulphur candle route, you could always scrub everything down with  diluted Jeyes fluid.

I do this every year, pressure washer with the bottle attachment on for a soft spray filled with Jeyes then a scrub with a soft brush and finally a rinse and vent till dry. works well for me

If using Jeye's Fluid keep well out of the range of cats as it's toxic for them.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Here the go-to product would be Physan 20.  Although it is designed for hard surfaces, some people dilute it to treat problems on orchids, so it is generally plant-safe.

Standing next to jeyes. It's for the inside of a wooden greenhouse/garden room. So hand clean.
Thank you all

PS will still be using sulphur candles. Stocked up last year

We have a garden section in our  shop.  We can't get sulphur candles, always have done in the past.  We've asked why but can't get an answer.

I keep the side louvre always slightly open throughout winter, that seems enough to keep most mould at bay. For green algae etc growing on the windows I just use a dish sponge and water and bicarb inside and out in December . Then just use a squeegee. Once a year keeps them clean enough

Been down the RHS website which lists withdrawn chemicals this information came up wighty. Obviously people don't stock as customers can't be relied on to use them as directed.  :D

Active ingredient Sulphur (Sulphur candle)
Brand name(s) Growing Success Deadfast Greenhouse sulphur candle. Sulphur candles are still offered as cleaning agents rather than pesticides, and must be used as directed on the label
Main use A general glasshouse fumigant used to kill fungal spores on exposed surfaces
Last date of use 31.12.11

I don't think they can actually be banned for greenhouse cleaning, as they're sold openly in many online stores.
eg https://www.removepests.co.uk/products/agro-greenhouse-sulphur-candles
Perhaps it is something to do with us leaving the Eu?

They aren't banned for greenhouse cleaning so far as I can see but they are for lots of other uses they had previously. And the last date of use is many years before even the referendum was held. Online is a murky place. Are the stores UK based is the question every time.
