welsummer chick
« on: August 29, 2015, 15:51 »
wrote a while back about the chicks I have.  was told they were all girls but have two that look very suspiciously like boys.  I think they are welsummers which I understand are easy to sex as day old chicks so not really sure why I would have two potential cockerals out of 4 if this is the case as I got them from a breeder of chicks and not just from a random hatching.  anyway, pic attached, hopefully.  am I right?

It is not a Welsummer hen.  My hen has a light brown head.

shame, I have two very pretty boys then!  I also have two lovely girls too, one a bantam, is very tiny, but very cute.  they're very friendly chickens these.  have 3 pekin and a silkie bantam as well, and while they're friendly, they don't follow me around like these four do!  guess I need to try rehoming the boys.

That's definitely male - I have had a couple of Welsummer cockerels and still have one, all reared from chicks and that is a boy. One good thing I will say about them is that they do look after the ladies well, but grow to be quite large and may be too heavy for your little bantams.

at the moment the boys are totally under the thumbs (so to speak) of the older bantam ladies! but they are still relative babies.  trying to find them new homes, more for the benefit of my neighbours who will mutter loudly if they start to crow early in the morning!

It doesn't change when they grow up! At 5 years of age my cockerel is dictated to by the ladies and is not too sprightly now he is an old man - they can easily outrun him. The only chance he gets now is if they are distracted with treats and he sneaks up on them! :D :D
