Hi all,
I incubated 8 quail eggs, with only one chick hatching.  (6 not fertilised and one dead with most of the yolk unabsorbed) She was very wobbly after hatching and had a curled foot which I have mostly corrected.  However, she did look very premature with very little covering and very very thin.  Since Saturday, she has drunk ok by herself but not eaten.  I have tried tapping, boiled egg yolk, using a syringe with some very runny mash and have ground up the chick crumb and put it in a syringe.  I am struggling to get her strength up.  She is able to walk, but stumbles and falls over.  My big concern is what can I do to help her.  I am aware that the outlook is not promising, but I want to try everything I possibly can.  I have spent hours and hours online, but there is very little for quails. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much for anything you can offer.
Ruth

I had a similar experience with a quail and pureed apple, carrot, garlic with a little honey and water.  I dipped its beak in it and it did get some nourishment from it.  It is better than trying to feed solids and I think it helps stimulate their appetite.  It was feeding after a while and now is fully grown, fit and healthy.  Good luck with your quail Tigerwren.   :)

Hi ANHBUC,
thank you so much for your advice, unfortunately, she died which we are very sad about.  I will remember your advice for next time though.  Thanks for your help.

So sorry Ruth, it is always touch and go when they have problems as chicks.  It sounds as if they eggs were not a good batch and if the chick survived it would not be good breeding stock.

For future reference you can also try a little honey mixed in boiled water then cooled, it is quicker if needed in a hurry.

Hi ANHBUC,
it's funny you mention the eggs, because that was our second attempt with the same breeder so we will wait awhile and try another.  It's crazy how attached you become so quickly.  My boys and I are gutted, but will keep honey close by for another time.  Thanks again for the advice

If you post your location on your profile Ruth there may be members near by who can advise you on a good supplier or even do a swap for some fertile eggs.   :)
