Some Welsummers produce dark brown, brick-coloured eggs like a Marans. Others produce a speckled brown egg. Either way, they're great, resourceful birds and a pleasure to own.

I read recently that the colour can fade over time and that this is a sign of a prolific layer. Some breeders try to promote the strong egg colour in their strains and actually reduce the laying capacity for cosmetic reasons.

I haven't been on here for a few days so only just seen your replies!

Oh dear I've been praising the wrong bird!!

I thought it was our Maran who's been laying but it was Sunset all along.
My eldest son siad it was her all along...hmm now I have to admit to him that he was right...he won't let me forget this for a while!!

We have also had a couple of slightly lighter brown eggs (without the speckeldy pattern) this week so I think they must be from our maran.

So now we have three hennies laying. I've just read they can eat pomegranets.I'll try them with one on Christmas day for a treat I think!

HAPPY Christmas EVERYONE
