Title: lice and chickens - help!
Post by: Han on July 15, 2012, 19:13
I've just got a bottle of Johnson's anti-mite spray for use on my chickens - can anyone advise me how much to use? The instructions say 1 -3 pump actions for small birds and 3 to 5 for big ones - but its meant for budgies etc. I did about 5 -7 pumps on my chickens and bantams yesterday but have just checked and disappointed to find lice still crawling around. Seems like the chucks should be soaked in the stuff in order to get to all the lice but I don't want to overdose them. Would be very grateful for any advice about how much / how often etc  - thanks

HAve you tried using mite powder on them? The  one I use is nettex which seems effective.make sure you give the coop a big clean else youll waste ur time treating the chook.if u look ule find other threads about cleaning after mites. Someone with a bit more knowledge will probly advise you soon. Good luck

I found powder didn't work no matter how much I used.  Frontline spray did the job nicely. My vet was happy to sell it if I told her it was for my 'cat'.

If you are using the Frontline spray or drops part the feathers at the back of the neck and apply directly to the bare skin.  This is the only place they can't get at easily so won't digest it.   ;)
