Garlic is usually planted to grow over winter, but can be planted early spring.

It doesn't take up a lot of room, so I'd say you've nothing to lose - go for it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I did read some advice about popping the cloves into the fridge for a day before planting so that it developes cloves!?!?!?

Does anyone else remember this or am i losing it?  :?

2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

someone told me that if you plant it as a border around your other crop beds, it keeps slugs away - anyone tried that?

to plant it - do you just split up an ordinary store-bought bulb into cloves and plant em?

You can plant normal cloves bought from the store but the experts say avoid this as it introduces disease into your garden. You can pick up a pack of cold weather garlic for a couple of quid from a garden centre.

The varieties sold in the shops are often warm weather (med climate) and so do not grow as well here.

No, it doesn't keep slugs away from anywhere!!!

I found slugs right there, on my garlic bed! Nothing's destroyed, but they were there for sure!

It would work but only if you had about 3X the garlic to other plants. Not too practical for most people. Some of the companion planting combos work well, but not many. Best to just use the usual precautions against particular predators.

As for corn dolly's late planting, I doubt you'd get more than the single clove/bulb in yield by planting so late. At best, a very small head. Fall is your best time so it can set roots overwinter and be ready for spring growth.

Coffee grounds are supposed to stop slugs, crushed egg shells are supposed to work aswell. I bought my OH 50 ways to kill a slug as one of his Christmas pressies.

Apparently hair as well - shaven hair   . Needless to say, I've got my OH shaving onto a bowl... I must try this!

Lol. I bought it for my OH coz i was sick of going outside in a morning and finding salt circles. OH would go out when it was dark and put a ring of salt round each slug he found.

I've just dedicated my Ikea ice bucket and ice holders (can't think what they are called at the moment - mental block) to killing them - collect, salt and throw. Now i have a compost bin I just throw them in there so they can earn their keep. Killing them is fun, yes, fun but it's so disgusting throwing the slimy liquified slugs out - bleeeuuurrgghhhhh!
