Holes in potatoes and storage
« on: August 12, 2011, 10:53 »
We have been harvesting our potatoes for a few weeks now and have noticed a few of them have holes in them, not all the way through but like something has bored into them. Is it worth digging them all up now and storing them? Our gardening book says we can cut the foliage right down once it's died back a lot and leave them underground but don't want to do this if the hole problem is going to get worse!
Also it says prior to storage, once you've dug the potatoes up to leave them to dry off in the sun for a few hours, then transfer to paper sacks, store in a cool, dry and dark place and that they will keep til Spring. Is this the best way?

What kind of potatoes are they? Earlies won't keep as long as next spring.

Sounds like wireworm damage, has the area been grassed over recently as they normally feed on grass roots. Probably best to dig them up as the damage will just get worse as slugs move into the holes and start munching as well. Mine stored ok for a few months like this last year.

They're maincrop Maris Pipers.
There wasn't grass there recently but it's right next to the lawn (although this has now been dug up as well!).
If we dig up and bag them would it be possible to store them in our shed? Or would it get too cold? We really want to keep them all but storage space is minimal indoors!

You should keep them cool and frost free. If you can guarantee that in your shed then its a good place to keep them, being Maris Piper - a maincrop - they should store happily for a good long time.  :)
