The poultry feed producers would have us believe that a laying chicken requires 4oz  per day.

As much as they possibly can !!    :)

I think the average stated is about 125g/day of layers' pellets but don't know how that would translate into other foodstuffs.

I know sometimes the feeder is way down and other days it looks hardly touched. Depends on what else they find perhaps.

Also depends on breed whether they are laying or not etc  :)

I know what you mean some days I seem to fil up thier feeder and there is loads left and other times not a lot!!

I do find some times that they have an awful habit of tipping thier food on the floor......does anyone have any tips to stop this?

I do have the food hung up.......and I also use a small plastic feeder as I only have two girls!!

You can get anti-scratch rings (ours has one integrally moulded) to stop them throwing their pellets everywhere.

We only have one 3kg feeder for 6 girls. Hung under the coop with the water drinker. Get very little spillage and it's out of the way of their scratching areas so nothign gets thrown into it either.

My girls have about a 250g flora tub of corn a day each and access to layer pellets and a lot of ground. They don't always need as much corn and often don't bother with many layer pellets as they find loads to eat around the garden and a few treats from the kitchen (no meat or fish).

I have found a cheap(cheep)    lasagne dish from Tesco or Wilkos are flat and wide enough not to get knocked over.

Scroll down the page. Our feeder has the same principle but moulded into the lid.
