Title: Cat food?
Post by: Ygerna on February 01, 2009, 10:24
I have seen two of my chickens plucking one of the other girls and eating her feathers. They are fed layers pellets and are only allowed out of the run after an hour of being let out of their house to try and make sure they eat enough of that. They are also put back into their run about 3ish to make sure they get enough before bed.

I understand that it may be because they are looking for more protein, and have read that cat food can be offered as a supplement.

I have some Whiskas Kitten food pouches, can I offer them this, and if so how much, and how often please?

thanks in advance

As Babe say's it's really only as a treat or I use for a quick boost.
As to how much it depends on how many birds you've got ? 3/4 hens then in my opinion 1 packet maybe once a week.

As a longer term thing the specs Babe's mentioned do the trick and stop the pecking or you could try adding some poultry spice to their food just to be sure they aren't lacking in anything in particular.

Some info on the spice here :
