What to put in root trainers/pots...
« on: April 27, 2009, 16:57 »
...that will take a while before they need planting out.

I'm still preparing my plot section by section and planting one bit after the next; I have two beds ready for spuds and onions, I need to dig another for sweetcorn and 'something else'... so what can I be bringing on indoors while I'm workin?

Advice please!

Brassicas, they almost like being transplanted so ideal for starting off in seed trays, they moved to pots and finally outside.

Cheers Bob!

I cheated (well, my wife bought me them) and got some of Aldi's early cabbage and cauliflower. The came in their own little propogater packs (very reusable  :D ) which were left inside for a week or so, then I hardened them off before planting last week... they don't look ever so happy...  :(

I might put some broccoli in - it's too early for sprouts, is it?

many options incl runner or dwarf beans, all the greens including kale which has been a good source of fresh material for the kitchen for over 6 months and still going well.
Root trainers were a new one for me this year and I like them. Already had sweet peas out of them and peas and mange tout and now just planted up with sweet corn for second phase planting. So three uses out of each rootrainer in about 4 months. Good value, bit fiddly but good results.

Kale, there's a thought. I like Kale!

Yes, I got a load of rootrainers off Freecycle and am keen to put them to use!  :D

dad-in-law plants loads of lettuce individually in wee yogurt pots and they sit there for months until they're ready to go in...

I've been a bit nervous of starting salad leaves, I don't know why...

My local B&Q have them at half price £3.50, holds 24 plants. Seemed like a good price as you can reuse them again and came with a clear plastic top i.e. propagator like.
