I always chit my beans on kitchen roll in takeaway boxes and plant them as soon as they shoot but I don't know wether to put them in root trainers or straight into 3" pots. I am trying to save a bit of work as my other half is about to have a hip replacement so I will be doing the allotment on my own from May but abviously don't want to upset the plants  Any advice appreciated

I am a big fan of roottrainers and always use biggest size they make. Not always easy to find space initially in propagator or on window cills as they need more room than a few pots and timing is more critical as I think plants come on quicker so can be too quickly ready if working backwards from last frost dates. Rootrainers less likely to fall over if they get dry but as roots are longer they need slightly deeper hole so roots not cramped when planting so take a few seconds more per plant to put out.

A third for root trainers. 32 beans in a block of root trainers take up a lot less space than 3 inch pots. Root systems better as well.

Definitely roottrainers. I always use them for beans and sweet corn. Need to use deepest size.

I make deep paper pots about 3/4 of the length of the polish can long.

Thanks everybody. I was leaning towards root trainers myself but was worried they would out grow them before I was ready to plant out but will take that chance for the sake of the quality of seedlings.

The beauty of root trainers is they air prune themselves whereas in pots the roots go round & round if left a little too long. One year my runner beans got all tangled at the tops as I was delayed planting them. Try as I might to untangle 24 bean stalks, every time a got some untangled they would re twist around one another so I chopped them all off down to the first or second set of leaves in a kill or cure attitude. Best beans I've ever had, so prolific. Not sure why I've not done it again. Might sow early this year & prune again.
