What are you trying to do with it?

Admittedly over the years I've broken a few, but that was doing something they weren't designed to do, like dig up roots of bushes.

If you were simply (be honest) digging over the plot, they should not have broken and you'd have recourse to take them back for a refund. Don't get a replacement, buy something decent.

Buy cheap, buy twice. I go for the ilk of something like Joseph Bentley, you can often pick up a half price offer at garden centres.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ouch

I've seen a lot of people recommend the Bulldog brand on here.  I've got a Wilkinson Sword stainless steel border fork and spade which have been well and truly abused (the fork, anyway) for up to 10 years.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Where did that go?

Someone moved the topic whilst I was typing away. (Thanks JayG). I was going to do it when I'd finished!

The Joseph Bentley range (and others) have a good solid traditional wooden shaft.

(I'm assuming you meant shaft, rather than handle).

The previous  holder or someone before him has put very big slaps down and over time or what ever they have become under the soil and between the slaps someone as planted big plum trees and I am trying to remove them both.

I have used an axe, spade and fork, but only broke the forks lol

Suggest you cut through any roots first, they have an awful lot of purchase, then a pickaxe to help loosen/lift slabs or maybe use a fulcrum and lever, would suggest a metal bar of 4-5 feet. Good luck & mind your back.

I bent the prongs on my old fork (inherited, no brand name) on a tree root I didn't know was there. Well, I think it was a tree root. My soil is heavy but I don't think it's that bad. Prefer spade for digging clay as fork just bounces off at the moment.

We have always tried to go for the most expensive garden tools we can afford as found cheaper spades, forks etc just don't last.

Our stainless steel sets are great, even got his and hers 8)
