This morning after just letting the girlies into the big run, there was a bit of a commotion and it looked like they were all chasing a butterfly so I went to have a look and they had caught a field mouse????   they were then chasing each other around grabbing it off each other??? Is this normal? (I took it off them till I knew more) :?
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow you were lucky to catch them

My Buff Orps do it when they can :(  I can't get near to take it off them, they free range so the chase could end anywhere

I seem to remember someone else saying they'd seen this happen.

It hasn't done my girls any harm, but we don't have neighbours who might use poison, think that would be the only problem for the hens :?

few I thought they had been watching the cat too much! thanks for the replies, dont know if any neighbours use poison we have fields near our house so probably came from there. the cats always bringing them home and she eats them, sometimes leaving just the head outside the back door to freak the kids out!!

Maybe the cat wants to share her catches with her new feathery friends. :D

more like she would like to catch her new feathery friends!! she still goes into pounce mode sometimes but usually gets a peck and then runs off.

A few months back, a dove got into the run and our 6 girls had it pinned down in a corner, and were systematiclly plucking it and trying to kill it  :?

I had to go in and shoo them away so I could help it out. It flew off but was a bit battle scarred.

We did have a frog in too but we spotted that before they did.

I think there must be a distant genetic link to cats somewhere.  :)

Mine were attacking a slow worm yesterday, but I saved it as I like slow worms  :) . With regard to if the mouse had been poisoned or not, my pest control friend advised that secondary poisoning is unlikely according to the manufacturers of the poison we use. The chooks found some blue slugs when we checked the bait boxes and got to them before I could shoo them away from them  , and they are fine since eating them :D .
