Dwarf french beans, how should they look?
« on: April 30, 2012, 20:17 »
I planted some dwarf french beans and some purple ones on the 19th April.
I planted 1 bean in each module and put them in the spare bedroom, they've all sprouted and now they are roughly 6'' tall with leaves right at the top.
Should they be this tall or are they too leggy?
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

6" tall in 11 days and to first set of leaves is rather too leggy in my view.

They may be OK but it sounds like insufficient light.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are on the windowsill in a South facing window

You could try putting foil behind them, to reflect more light back onto them.

they sound alright to me, we've got some in the greenhouse now (south facing and surrounded by light) and we've grown them successfully for the last few years. they do seem to race up before filling out. personally i wouldn't worry
If I plant them, will they grow?

Thanks a lot,I think I'll put them in my upright cold frame.
Do you think that will be ok,failing that it's not too late to plant some from seed in the allotment is it?

Might be a bit cold in the cold frame yet.

I will be sowing mine from scratch indoors in pots this weekend.  I always lose the direct sowings to slugs ... !

Thanks Yorkie,if it's too cold in your coldframe it must be too cold in mine as we live in the same area.
The tomatoes are doing fine in there though :D

Bags of time yet I wouldn't plant under the cloche yet leave it a couple of weeks then sow direct under cloches

The plants I risked planting out under cloches (I shall be sowing more soon) have survived but have not put on much growth.

The new ones will no doubt catch them up.

It is an experiment that I may not bother repeating (and it has not even been that cold at night at about 5/6C ...although they do prefer a nightime temp of at least 10 C)

As I said, new ones will soon catch them up  ::)

You can plant dwarf beans as late as July and still get a decent crop. Sow a row every month and you should get a succession of cropping through the Summer.

To all many thanks for advice.
Prior to retirement I did everything late now I am too early in many cases.

Salmo, I am just up the road from you at Crowland.
