Hi all,

I am potting on my Toms and am thinking to save money by using my own compost for the bottom 3/4 of the pot and then adding bought in for the top, the thinking is that I will be burying any weed seeds at the bottom of the pot so they should not germinate.

Does anyone know of a down side to this please

I can think of another upside - you would be reducing the amount of peat used, which is great for the peat habitats of Ireland.

I did this with potatoes grown in bags last year and it worked very well - 3/4 full of my own compost and then the last 1/4 in bought peat free compost. I turned the contents out at harvest and spread the spent compost on the allotment beds.

I do - Bulrush Professional Forest Gold Multi Purpose Compost with added John Innes.

It's very good.
