Where once there were onions...
« on: March 12, 2011, 07:24 »
... now there will be...

Well.  I can't decide.  I've been given a long list of veg I can grow where I had the onions on my plot last year but do not know how successful they'll be in these un-sunny climes!  Any thoughts on the following?

Okra
Chillies
Lima Beans
Mangetout
Sweet Peppers
Soya Beans
Aubergines
French Beans
Tomatos
Snap Peas
Peas
Cucumbers
Sweetcorn
Pumpkins
Squashes
................................................?

Or, "none of the above".

More on crop rotation here:

Whether you follow the 3,4, or 5 year plan, the answer is "spuds".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks both.  Momofstig, when you say rotation aside, do you mean none of the stuff should go where the onions went? ???

What I meant was ....if you are not following one of the usual rotation plans, which put brassicas after spuds., then any of the things you want to grow can follow onions :)

Some people don't follow strict rotation plans like the ones DD has linked. As long as you avoid growing something in the same place in the next year you'll be fine.
That would mean any of the crops you fancy growing could go in the old onion bed.

Is that clear or have I made it worse

Clear as mud day to me so I reckon it'll be easily understood.  ;)

Mumofstig, if I'm understanding you right, that's very good news, it opens the way for a lot more options, I expect it means you just have to  treat the soil with whatever the veg you want to grow likes etc..

Cheers!  ;)
