Aubergines or lack of?
« on: August 13, 2007, 13:11 »
Hi. Growing aubergines for the first time this year-thanks to a greenhouse from freecycle!  Well, out of 5 plants I have one fruit developing which would look good in any greengrocers shop.  I'm really pleased with it but can't decide whether it's time to eat it or whether I should leave it a few more days to get bigger    Anyway, all the plants are covered in flowers but none of them seem interested in producing fruit-the flowers just finish, go brown and drop off :?  Any suggestions?

Wild guess cos I dont know much about aubergines could be lack of pollination and / or too dry.  Try spraying the plants when flowers open and moving pollen around with a paint brush
Fancy growing aubergines mesel next year.

Cut the ripe one while it`s still firm and glossy, the smell of a homegrown fruit is so different fromshop bought.I`m not having a great year this year as even inthe greenhouse the temprature isn`t high or constant.I`ve been out with the little brush but unles we have a long warm autumn any fruit not formed in the next week or so will not have time to mature.

Thanks for the replies.  Will try with the paintbrush and see what happens.  Something to try again next year.  It's the only way to learn. :)
