Hi,

Just wanted peoples thoughts on jiffy 7's for use with seedlings that do not like root disturbance. Has anyone found these are best to use with specific plants.

I know some people use toilet rolls instead. Really silly question but how do you stop the compost from falling out the bottom??? Does it just stay in?

I've used Jiffy7s and won't use them again.  Apart from the fact that they are made from peat, I found them to dry out very quickly, be a nightmare to re-wet, and didn't disintegrate easily after planting out.

I use paper pots instead of toilet rolls.  The pots are folded so there is a base, and the paper rots away easily once planted out (make sure no paper sticks up above soil level though).

Used Jiffy-7's ages ago (and I do mean Decades!).  Seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I too use Richy's Newspaper Pots.

i have made 40+ paper pots whilst watching the telly tonight (Coronation Street).

I use bog rolls and Jiffy 7's. I use Jiffy 7's for the bigger seeds, eg dahlia, sunflowers and marigolds. Veg wise I used them for parsnips. 

With the loo rolls you have to pack the compost in firmly, I press it down with the handle of the trowel

We tried Jiffy 7's once but found the germination rate poor, very possibly due to the drying out problems already mentioned. Paper pots it is!

I used loo rolls, pack the compost in and then place them in an old mushroom tray (the ones you get mushrooms in from Mo*****ns) and had good results with most things that i grew.
Im going to give the Paper Pots a go this time though.

So do I!  The high sides supports the loo rolls very well I find and holds a goodly amount of water
