Weeds on the compost heap??????
« on: June 28, 2007, 20:37 »
Hi all
Just back from the lottie before more rain..........  :x
Just wondered - what is the concensus regarding putting weeds on the compost heap, is it a total no - no or is it ok?  I have just pulled lots of young weeds yet to form seed so are these ok to compost.

Don't see a problem there, providing there's no perennial roots either.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Bung all the annual weeds on, seeded or not.  Dry out and drown perennial weeds before adding to the heap - it's all useful stuff and the bigger the heap the better the compost you will end up with.

The exception to this advice might be if you are tackling japanese knotweed which I have no experience of fortunately for me.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Thought I'd dug my Japanese Knotweed out, then it came backa bit so hit it with Clinic Ace.  Then it came back a bit further up the path through a crack, so yesterday it got the Clinic Ace treatment again!!!  But don't worry, its not near any other vegetation

all my weeds go on the heap, keep stiring the heap every few weeks and riddle the final compost no problems to report.
the only exception is the potato haulms they go in the fire bin heathy or not
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

the most important things with a compost heap is to make it as big as possible at least a metre square(3 pallets) and keep it covered and stir it up quite often

I have read that comment a few times, so I guess I am doing the right thing by buying this one? :

I just thought it looked more pratical than that kind :

But it does make me wonder why the latter is the most popular though...

PG - you can make the top one very easily and for free by wiring four pallets together  :D   Not quite as pretty, but just as effective!
