Sweetcorn - yellowing leaves
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:49 »
Hi all - I managed to chit my sweetcorn seed successfully and then transfer them to paper pots.
They have sprouted well and are now about 4" tall. They are indoors in a sunny conservatory. In the last week the outside leaves have started to turn yellow.
Can anyone tell me why and what I should be doing? (I tried a "search" to find the answer but couldn't find any information).
Thanks in anticipation  :)

They ought to be quite happy how and where you are growing them.

The only thing I can think of is the possibility that you are overwatering them. Keep the compost moist rather than soggy.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Yellowing leaves could be an indication that they need nutrients and the compost might be depleted, if you are not ready to plant then out yet you might want to give them a weak feed.

Thanks folks - could be overwatering, but when they're drier, I'll try a weak feed........cover all my bases!  ::)

I was just thinking that at only 4" tall they shouldn't have run out of food already, unless the compost was a bit duff to start off with.  ;)

Corn is a high nitrogen feeder so use something with a high first number to get them through this period until you can plant them out. Even a flower fertilizer will do.
