Sweetcorn disaster!
« on: May 13, 2010, 12:24 »
I planted my sweetcorn out a couple of weeks ago - they were really healthy, strong and tall.  I went back up a few days later to find their once green leaves all yellow and lying flat on the soil.  I've put fleece over them now but horse and barn door spring to mind!!

Are they dead or will they come back?  I have got some more in reserve.

it's a bit early to be planting sweetcorn out, I think. I reckon they are gonners  :(

i would sow some now in the greenhouse or window sill and plant them out in June when the nights are a lot warmer.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

That would indeed be a miracle but not one that happens very often to sweetcorn in that state I'm sorry to say.

You no doubt won't be planting out your spares until you are more sure about the temperatures, so you might as well leave the others there "just in case".   ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I'm guilty of planting out too early too...plants looked great for a couple of days but now resemble straw!  :((unfortunately they were all my 'minipop' plants)
I'm not fretting though as I have 36 'Applause' between 1 and 4 inches high on the windowsill of the conservatory...and next year I'll be older AND wiser  :)

Only 3 weeks from sowing (in some warmth, and at this time of year) to planting out (don't forget to harden off!) so time enough to grow some more :)

Mine wont be outside till end of the month and then under a pop bottle for a couple weeks.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Sundance eh?  Taste ok?  I planted Incredible f1 last year and my only gripe with them was that they took until Sept to mature.  Mind you, it was a lousy summer.  Tasted good though, so worth the wait.

Think that is what my new plants are. Hope they grow well.
