Leggy leeks
« on: April 14, 2010, 20:53 »
My  leeks are about 2" high and rather thin rather like fine grass. Is this normal?

They are fine. If they are in containers keep them in a cool draught proof area and keep them well watered. If outside in the ground they will be fine but keep them from drying out. I assume you are going to transplant them later into their final position?

By that I assume they are in a container of some sort, as are mine. I started mine in a trough outside down the lottie (not enough space for a seed bed), they are grass like, and are being watered regularily. They are hardy things, when you can I would move them out of the greenhouse.  :)

Sorry I got the quote bit mixed up

I will move them out of the greenhouse tomorrow. I will now be worried about the slugs

.. and make sure they're in nice deep containers or else the roots will form knots that would mystify a seasoned sailor and you'll never get the individual plants apart to transplant them (I learned the hard way :) )

I wouldn't worry, I'm  sure they'll be fine - Look at Johns video on planting out leeks here :

All a bit tangled but ok  in the end  :)
