Runner Bean Germination
« on: May 04, 2007, 13:44 »
I put lots of runner bean seeds in pots a couple of weeks ago. One week later they started to rear their heads. Since then nothing else has happened. I took a couple out of the pots and they seem have mould on them. Also some of the roots seemed to be sticking up out of the soil as opposed to growing down into it.

What did I do wrong? Did I water too much. Were they too cold? Were they not deep enough? What do you think?

Cheers

Nowt wrong Yummy, I have problems this year too with them, I did email T&M about it, now they reccomend doing this-- pre soak the compost with cheshunt solution before sowing, put the bean into the compost and cover with vermiculite, now the method I have just used and been 100% is to soak the bean for 3 hours, nip the wrinkled bit with some nail clippers and then sow in a heated propogator, the only problem with this method is I believe it can increase the risk of halo blight. we will see.

Thanks - Didn't realise runner beans could be so complicated

I have none of the things you describe above so it looks like I need to go shopping.

I bought a packet of scarlet emperor and tried those instead of the saved seed I was given. Almost 100% germination this time  :)
