... can you root soft wood cuttings?  Well tis a bit late to ask really cos I'm 2 days into trying it, but any tips and advice would be useful.  

Even if it is chuck em out and make room in the greenhouse for something that will grow!

Short answer is I dont know.General advice seems to be take hardwood cuttings at the back end or layer.Would love you to prove convention wrong Wellies.Keep us posted.   Bob.

I think they'd do better in pots outside.  Reasoning is that it doesn't get so hot, so evaporation from leaves is reduced.
 

I took some a couple  of months ago.  They're outside & have leaves now.  (haven't checked for roots)  Keep them moist - in a gritty compost so they are  never waterlogged.
