Shady Veggies
« on: March 17, 2009, 20:54 »
Seems pretty much every veggie prefers planting in full sun but there must be some veggies that will do OK if not fantastic in partial shade. I grew carrots in the shadey side of garden last year and they did OK but all had carrot fly so not going to replant there. My sprouts were also doing OK until the pigeons got them all(another first year mistake hopefully not repeated). So any recomendations on those that will tolerate shade (Leeks, parsnips maybe?)

Thanks
Karl

I've heard swede doesn't mind a bit of shade

Shade doesn't make a difference to carrot fly, you just need to protect against it!

Salad leaves don't like full sun during the summer.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I don't have a choice,  my veg patch is in  the shade for 50-70% of the day.  I find that everything is just a couple of weeks later than if it was full sun.  I grow runner & broad beans, peas, cabbages, beetroots, onions, sprouts, leeks, shallots, carrots & potatoes.  Ok, so I probably don't get a bumper harvest, but enough for the two of us.

oops, forgot,  lettuce & parsnips ;)
The tomatoes have to go in pots in the sun on the patio & the q's in the greenhouse!!!

My storage box is eventually going in the shadiest bit of my plot!
I'm putting raspberries in the next shadiest part, a morello cherry next year, and maybe a kiwi fruit to climb a certain tree that the council won't get rid of. Rhubarb likes a bit of shade, and strawberries don't mind, but fruit better in sun.
Comfrey will grow in shade too, and hazel. (Not sure there's much point in growing hazel for nuts, unless you can make a squirrel proof cage, but it will still provide useful sticks.)

Ok, I know they're not veg!  :tongue2:
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I'm reading John's book and he says that putting true spinach in the shade is a good idea because it stops it bolting.
and apparently, it likes it cool.

Cukes and black currants don't mind some shade. Last year my green peppers gave a bumper crop in a fairly shady spot.

Looks like Karlwood is no longer active here, but I thought I'd add my new discovery of wild garlic, Allium ursinum. Delicious. Much nicer than spinach!  8)
