today at allotment........pics
« on: February 26, 2009, 17:05 »
hi all

been down at the allotment to finish raised spuds bed
what do you think?

i've used up all my rotton manure so now im going to build a new manure frame.
but first can i use the soil from the bottom where the old manure was to fill up two bath tubs to grow some carrots in or should i dig some soil from some where else that not had manure on it?

It may be safer to use some soil from somewhere else as carrots will fork if they encounter a clod of manure. Add some sharp sand or fine grit if your soil is heavy. Really impressed with pics of your raised bed and lotty. Lots of work there I see! You've inspired me to take some pix of my veg garden. I've set up a blog but need to use the help on the website (and a rainy day) to get it going. Hope you get some lovely tasty tatties!  :D
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If I've read yr post correctly (and I am on my 3rd bacardi & coke  ) then you should use the excavated soil providing it is not subsoil, ie more than one spades depth, for your carrots but not anything which has been manured recently otherwise as Goosegirl says they will fork ::)

Love the raised bed from those panels though  :D
