Marrowfat Peas

Ok here is the first question we have bought some pea seeds.
Kelvedon Wonder a Marrowfat Pea.
Now my question is
What is the difference between a Marrowfat Pea and a Garden Pea?

I know the marrowfat peas are used to make Mushy Peas but apart from that is there any difference?

You have me scratching my head here. I've never heard of Kelvedon Wonder being called a marrowfat pea before and I've been growing it for years!  It's quite a sweet, smallish pea and not my vision of the big things you get in cans!

What the proper defintion is I don't know - so I'll have to pass this to someone more knowledgeable. I just stick 'em in the ground & treat them the same as all the other varieties of garden pea.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

there is no diffeence ,marrowfat peas were developed for processing into cans etc ,they also make good storage peas , kelvedon wonder are a first early type pea . for a pea of distinction in my book try laxtons progree a wrinkled pea , or laxtons superb ,we grew them in knoxville and i stil grow them here when i can get the seed

Thank you I wondered what the difference was basically none then, just the name and they are for storage. Ours won't get that far we may end up freezing some but apart from that they will be eaten not stored.

Eat them fresh as garden peas, freeze them as garden peas.  Allow them to mature on the plant, dry them, and you have marrowfat peas.  I've never done it but I believe that to be the case.

Would be very surprised if you have enough peas to freeze, unless you have a massive plot and lots of time!

Just eat them when they are fresh!
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Suggest someone checks their info No wonder D.D. was puzzled.

Kelvedon Wonder - according to Suttons website is a GARDEN pea
Their Pea Maro is "the best MARROWFAT" or mushy

The sugar / starch ration is higher in marrowfats, opposite of sugar peas
