Suggestions for magazines?
« on: August 25, 2008, 21:37 »
I have read John's book (brilliant) and would now like some further reading material.  As my allotment 'hobby' continues to take over I would like to read some magazines which are relevant rather than the usual celeb ones!

Anyone got any suggestions on ones they have found useful?

I used to like the kitchen garden mag thats quite informative but like them all gets a bit repetitive over the years.

Exactly what I wanted to know.
Ive been subscribed to Gardeners World for about 18 months now, and last night compared Aug 07 to Aug 08. Basically very similiar editions!
I went online to cancel my subscription today and they have taken another £16.50 out. The second time they have renewed it without telling me OR a free gift for renewing! Im also more interested in veg growing than flowers and shrubs, so I just skim a lot of it.

Id love to know if theres a lotty mag somewhere out there....

I quite liked the early Grow Your Own and Kitchen Garden Mags, but like Richy said, they all sound the same year after year.  I gave them all away and only kept a few old Which gardening magazines from the mid 80's for reference.

I don't need mags anymore, I have the internet!!!!!  And this forum!!

I don't subscribe to gardening magazines but prefer a good book.

After you've read 'Vegetable Growing Month by Month' by John Harrison (signed copies available from the author - price £5.99 inc postage)***
you may like one of my other favourite reads:
The Allotment Book by Andi Clevely, published by Collins.

Agree with previous comments - you only need 1 year then it all comes around again!

You can get Gardeners World mag for about a tenners worth of  Tesco clubcard vouchers if you want a general gardening mag - more veg growing in it than there used to be.

Otherwise save up for a bit and buy a  book - or two!
Much more use in the long run.

For what?  Directing me towards the book that I said in my original post I have bought and read

Thanks for the advice everyone.  Knowing me I will buy Kitchen Gardener and Grow Your Own for a bit and see which one I prefer or whether I should continue to buy both!

I can imagine they get repetitive over time though.

I subscribed to GW magazine when I first got the lottie, thinking that as the #1 gardening show that they were bound to have loads of advice for a novice gardener but how wrong was I!!??

I have since cancelled my subscription for exactly the same reason... and honestly, how many times can they tell us about blimmin rudbeckias and clematis this year??

I subscribed to Amateur gardening because it's weekly and has more on what to do with veg, but this too concentrates far too much on flower gardening.

In the end I've cancelled all of my subscriptions except Practical Poultry because I know I can get any amount of advice on here!  :D

Magazines - The cost!!!
As a "returning gardener" I went looking for a magazine.  Cost £3 ++. It only takes 2 issues and you might as well buy a good book instead.

This month I bought John's!!!

The magazine, 'Grow It' is good for beginers. Most issues come with free Veg seed as well.

I'll only buy it a few more times as I agree most topics are respun every year.

A good read to recommend is, 'One Man and His Dig'.

Just ordered John's book for my B'day.

PUP!

I was just looking to get a mag series to read for a bit.
Theres quite a few.
Grow cook and eat
Grow it
Kitchen garden
Grow your own

For veg growing only and if you were to only get one, which do people think is the best overall. I did get one grow cook and eat which seemed ok.
