runner bean germination

After waiting patiently for runner bean seeds to appear as plants in pots in greenhouse, nothing has happened for a month. Can anyone point out what I am doing wrong?

I've had major problems with my RBs germinating. Two out of about 14, and the slugs got one. Could be the ground's too cold, as some put in yogurt pots in the greenhouse seem to have germinated ok. But I only checked one, so could just be a bad batch.

Apart from checking each day, don't know what to suggest. Maybe try soaking overnight and planting a dozen in growbag compost in an ice cream carton and keeping indoors or somewhere warm???

or try germinating on damp paper somewhere warm and in the dark to identify the 'live' ones early on

Like Muntjac says they usually come up pretty quick if warm, re sow as suggested sow you beans so the stand up rather than just laying flat in the soil, I think it helps others will disagree.  :)

I keep finding these edge-ways sown seeds on potting on, which have the root shoot going up then round the seed to find their way downwards.

Throw a hand full in a deep seed tray.

The future is............... cat litter trays!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Terry Walton, Allotment hero of the Welsh valleys has a top method with beans. Put them in a butty bag, cover with damp compost, tie and pop them somewhere warm, after 3-4 days they will start to sprut and then transplant to pots and then pop them in the ground when ready, done all me beans this way this year and it has been really good.

Very much agree DD - the future IS cat litter trays. Especially for leeks.

Got some decent germination in the greenhouse, and have also planted some French beans in an ice cream carton. The bean sticks will have half and half this year when these have germinated.

Trays are just useful to keep everything tidy in the greenhouse, and put pots in.

I tried Ady's tip last week and couldn't believe it, after 3 days there was a sprout!!!! :) And there was me soakin them for days beforehand in water with no effect whatsoever
I transferred them into pots but I think I made the mistake of pointing the white sprouty thing up... might have actually been the root part

But they're peeping out now :) :)

Done same with peas and just as great!

Wonder if it would work with small seeds too maybe?
