Feeding and Pinching out, Confused
« on: April 24, 2008, 16:24 »
a couple of questions

when do I need to pinch the tops off my broad beans ? they were winter planted aquadulce claudia and are about 12 inches high and flowering

do I need to feed my onion/shallot/garlick sets all of which are growing

if so would worm juice be ok ?

should I be feeding my broad beens as well ?

Thanks in advance

I don't grow broad beans so I can't advise you on those.

Garlic rarely needs extra feeding through the season, but if you didn't manure the soil well in fall, it could do with whatever you have.
Onions will always benefit from extra feeding, once every 2 weeks or so - and water.

I pinch mine off the earlier of the following: -

when the first pods appear on the lowest flowere
when the tips are starting to become immune to organic protection from black fly

Overwintered broad beans don't really need pinching. Black fly infestations start May June time, depending on the weather on young shoots, so these ones normally escape it.

I tend to top dress my over-wintered onions once in the spring with pelleted chicken manure. Worm juice should be fine.

Can give give broad beens a potash feed.

If the soil is well prepared extra feeds are not usually necessary for a lot of plants.
